Why use a balm or butter over a skin cream or lotion?
Most conventional skin creams & lotions are hydrous which means that they contain water (usually as the first & main ingredient) which requires the use of preservatives to prevent microbial growth & bacterial contamination. Water-based formulations usually also require higher concentrations of preservatives and stabilizers, which can lead to a dilution of active ingredients. This can affect the overall effectiveness of the product, especially if the active ingredients are present in lower concentrations.

Our balm & butter are anhydrous which means they do not contain water as one of their primary ingredients. Instead, they are composed of oils, waxes, and other hydrating agents.

These are some potential benefits of using anhydrous skincare products:
Longer Shelf Life: Water can be a breeding ground for bacteria and other microorganisms, making products that contain it more prone to spoilage. Anhydrous formulations, lacking water, are generally more stable and have a longer shelf life.

Preservative-Free Options: Water-based products often require the addition of preservatives to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. Anhydrous formulations may reduce the need for preservatives, which can be beneficial for individuals with sensitive skin or those who prefer products with fewer additives.

Concentration of Active Ingredients: Without the need for water, anhydrous products can have higher concentrations of active ingredients. This can lead to more potent and effective formulations, as there is less dilution of the key components.

Less Irritation: Some individuals with sensitive or reactive skin may find anhydrous products less irritating than water-based ones. This is because anhydrous formulations often contain fewer ingredients overall and may exclude potential irritants found in water-based products.

Emollient Properties: Anhydrous skincare products, particularly those containing oils and waxes, are known for their emollient properties. They can help soften and smooth the skin, providing a barrier that helps lock in moisture.
Suitable for Various Skin Types: Anhydrous products can be suitable for a wide range of skin types, including dry, sensitive, and mature skin. The absence of water means they are less likely to strip the skin of its natural oils, making them potentially beneficial for those with dry or dehydrated skin.
Versatility: Anhydrous formulations can be more versatile in terms of application. They are often thicker and more occlusive, making them suitable for use as night creams, spot treatments, or for specific skin concerns.

It's essential to note that while anhydrous skincare can offer these benefits, it may not be suitable for all skin types or concerns. As with any skincare product, individual reactions can vary, and it's advisable to patch-test new products to ensure compatibility with your skin.
